Duquesne Light Company Offers Electrical Safety Awareness Training for Local Emergency Responders

PITTSBURGH – As part of Duquesne Light’s recognition of National Safety Month, Duquesne Light announces its annual Electrical Safety Awareness Training for local first responders.  For more than 10 years, Duquesne Light has helped local firefighters, police officers, and other emergency personnel in Allegheny and Beaver counties to learn about working safely near energized power lines.

Firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and any other personnel who respond to local emergencies may attend the free sessions. Each session includes demonstrations and a presentation by Duquesne Light employees.

“Safety is the most important aspect of any job or emergency site,” said Ben Cain, Manager of Workforce Development. “With this program, DLC wants to enhance emergency responders understanding about electricity and how to respond to emergencies where an electrical hazard is present.”

Each free session includes a demonstration about the hazards of electric power lines using a high-voltage demo trailer, and real-life scenarios for first responders to learn how to respond to an emergency involving electricity. While these sessions will not qualify emergency responders to handle electricity, it will help them understand the hazards and how to manage this type of emergency situation.

The remaining sessions scheduled for this year include:

  • July 18, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Woods Run Training Center (2825 New Beaver Ave, Pittsburgh)
  • September 19, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Raccoon Service Center (214 Meadowlark Ln, Aliquippa)
  • November 21, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Penn Hills Service Center (469 Hershey Rd, Penn Hills)

While the sessions are free, seating is limited. Emergency responders interested in attending should contact Ben Cain at 412-393-7980 or bcain@duqlight.com for more information or to RSVP.
