Duquesne Light Company Shares Energy-Saving Resources as Summer Begins

Tips for keeping cool and conserving energy when temperatures are high

PITTSBURGH – With the official first day of summer today and temperatures reaching the 90s earlier this week, Duquesne Light Company (DLC) is encouraging customers to keep cool, while also conserving energy in the coming months.

DLC and the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission offer the following summertime tips:

  • Turn off non-essential appliances and as many lights as possible.
  • Use appliances that produce heat, such as clothes dryers, dishwashers and stoves in the early morning or late evening, not in the heat of the day.
  • Use ceiling fans to circulate the air.
  • Relax in rooms that do not receive direct sunlight or stay on the lowest floor of your home.
  • Replace air conditioning filters monthly for maximum benefit and check air and return vents regularly.
  •  On hot and humid days, set your thermostat at 78 degrees when you are home and 85 degrees or off when you are away for long periods of time.
  • Wash full loads of clothes in cold water whenever possible and avoid over-drying.
  • Request a “home energy audit” from DLC to identify any areas where energy is being lost and to find out ways to save on your heating and cooling bills.
