Duquesne Light, in partnership with the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC), welcomes 24 students to the latest Electrical Distribution Training (EDT) Program.

The EDT program functions as a partnership between Duquesne Light and CCAC designed to prepare students for entry-level positions within the skilled craft positions associated with electric utilities. Twenty-four students were admitted following a competitive process that included Construction and Skilled Trades (CAST) testing, developed by the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), as well as a three-day physical demonstration. Applicants additionally completed phone and in-person interviews.

Duquesne Light presented $5,500 scholarships to two of the students— Julianna Cranmer and Randall Rothbauer. Each was chosen by CCAC’s Educational Foundation following a stringent application process that included a written essay. The scholarship can be used toward tuition, books or other fees associated with the EDT Certificate Program.

The one-year EDT Program is designed to expose students to the theoretical and practical aspects of working in an electrical utility. This includes general education courses like math, introduction to information technology and AC theory, as well as the practical elements of working in overhead, underground and substation maintenance.

As a new component of the program, Duquesne Light created a five-week co-op in which students will rotate between Overhead, Underground, Substations, Field Engineering and the Operations Center. Following ten months of training, students will complete the EDT Program with a two-month internship, working directly with Duquesne Light field crews.

Duquesne Light is always seeking new talent. Check our careers page for more opportunities.
