Each year, the generosity of Duquesne Light employees shines through as they go the extra mile to help ensure those who are less fortunate in our local communities have a happy and joyous holiday season. This is made possible thanks to the overwhelming amount of gift donations and monetary support, as well as the volunteer efforts that help to make these annual holiday events a success.

Employees Spread Joy to Local Veterans

On Friday, Dec. 9, 30 DLC employees gave back to local veterans by personally delivering gifts to the residents of Southwestern Veterans Center through the Company’s Presents for Patients Program. This marks Duquesne Light’s 10th year participating, and employees never tire of the good conversations and the patients’ appreciation.

This year, more than 100 veteran patients were adopted by employees across the Company who purchased “wish list” items ranging from blankets and slippers to snacks. Southwestern Veterans Center provides a broad spectrum of health care and related services to veterans who are disabled, chronically ill or in need of specialized care.

Toy Sorting Event at Salvation Army Warehouse
On Tuesday, Dec. 6, nine Duquesne Light employees volunteered their time at the Salvation Army’s warehouse in Carnegie to sort toy donations for its Treasures for Children Program, which helps provide holiday gifts to children in need. Once the gifts are sorted, they are then delivered directly to each of the Salvation Army’s Worship and Service Centers for distribution.

Volunteers helped to unload toys from Salvation Army trucks, sorted them into the appropriate categories and bagged the toys for distribution.

Employees Help Those in Need Stay Warm
As temperatures begin to dip below freezing, it’s more important than ever to help those in need stay warm this winter. On Friday, Dec. 2, in partnership with Operation Warm, 21 employees distributed 250 brand new winter coats to the students of Pittsburgh Manchester PreK-8 in Pittsburgh’s North Side neighborhood.

Operation Warm’s mission is to provide brand new winter coats to children in need, helping to improve self-confidence, peer acceptance, school attendance and overall wellness. This year, Duquesne Light provided a grant to the organization to help purchase 500 coats, with the first half being distributed at Pittsburgh Manchester PreK-8. The remaining 250 coats will be distributed on Jan. 6 at Rochester Elementary School in Beaver County.

Annual “Stuff the Bus” Event a Success
Each year, employees across the Company participate in the IBEW Local 29 “Labor of Love Stuff the Bus Toy Drive.” The annual event enables all employees to help families in need during the holiday season by donating gifts for area children who may not otherwise receive them.

On Thursday, Dec. 1, all of the generously purchased gifts were loaded onto a Port Authority bus to be distributed just in time for the holidays. Overall, nearly 800 toys and $200 in gift cards were collected to help benefit those in need.

A special thank you to all of our generous employees and happy holidays to all!
