Throughout the year, Duquesne Light employees volunteer their time and resources to serve our local communities. Employees recently participated in a variety of community events to help benefit those in need.
Help Rebuild Senior Citizen’s Home in Hazelwood
On Friday, May 19, 13 Duquesne Light employees partnered with Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh (RTP) to help rehabilitate a senior citizen’s home in Hazelwood. The organization’s mission is to provide critical repairs to homes owned by veterans, persons with disabilities and vulnerable seniors throughout Allegheny County, who are low income and are unable to complete these repairs on their own.
“I really enjoyed spending time with DLC employees during the volunteer event,” said Eric Stoller, RTP’s Chief Development Officer. “They were thoughtful, engaged, and ready to work hard to help benefit the community.” During its first 25 years, RTP has delivered more than $21.6 million in repairs, renovations and modification services to more than 2,556 households.
Donate Their Time to Help End Hunger
Hunger continues to be a problem communities are facing across the country, and the world. Office of General Counsel employees recently teamed up with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank in an effort to help combat hunger in our local neighborhoods.
On Friday, May 19, 36 employees volunteered at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, where they packed nearly 9,500 pounds of food for individuals and families in need throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Office of General Counsel employees volunteer at the Food Bank each year, as well as organize food collections at 411 Seventh Avenue.
Support Produce to People Program
Duquesne Light employee volunteers recently helped local residents connect with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank’s Produce to People program at Beaver Falls Middle School.
Produce to People provides individuals and families with 30 to 50 pounds of food, consisting mostly of fresh produce. This program helps ensure that local men, women and children have access to enough food to lead healthy lives. The Duquesne Light volunteers assisted with set-up, clean-up, repacking bulk produce items to individual portions, handing items to participants and helping them carry the food to their cars.
DLC Trucks Featured at Annual Touch-A-Truck Event
For the past 10 years, the Junior League of Pittsburgh’s annual Touch-a-Truck event has welcomed hundreds of local children and their families to Pittsburgh’s Strip District to learn about a variety of vehicles used by Pittsburgh companies, with proceeds benefitting the fight against childhood hunger.
This year, Duquesne Light again participated in the event, featuring three vehicles: a Digger Derrick, a Load Lift Bucket Truck and a Hybrid Electric Bucket Truck. Under the supervision of DLC employees, children were able to explore the trucks – both inside and out – including climbing into the buckets and honking the horns. In addition to experiencing the trucks, employees taught the children about safety and informed them about the important role Duquesne Light plays in the community, all while answering questions from the kids and their parents.
These employee efforts reinforce Duquesne Light’s commitment to upholding its core value to be selfless in serving the community. We will provide updates on other volunteer activities throughout the year.
