Every year, on the third Monday of January, people across the country celebrate the life and legacy of humanitarian and Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. And on a day that has since become known as the Martin Luther King Day of Service, thousands of volunteers across the country donate their time to make a difference on this occasion.

For the past 20 years, Duquesne Light Company employees have joined this movement, showing their compassion and dedication to community service by spending the federal holiday volunteering at various Pittsburgh area organizations through the Living the Dream project.

On January 16, a total of 75 employees spent the day doing their part to make the world a better place at eight area charities and organizations.

Organizations benefiting from the employee outreach efforts included:

  • Auberle – employees joined the children in educational activities and a program commemorating Dr. King.
  • Jewish Association on Aging Weinberg Village Assisted Living – employees donned their black and gold and joined the residents in a day of games, lunch and activities commemorating Dr. King.
  • North Hills Community Outreach – employees helped local seniors in the North Hills evaluate and upgrade safety measures in their homes, through the organization’s “Safety for Seniors” project.
  • Saint Barnabas Health System – employees performed household tasks, home maintenance and cleaning projects for the residents of Washington place.
  • Southwestern Veterans Center – employees prepared and served the traditional black-eyed peas and greens soup and cornbread lunch for the veteran patients and then joined them for afternoon bingo.
  • The Education Partnership – employees prepared and stocked the Resource room for the next round of teacher distribution appointments.
  • The Franklin Center’s Professional Outfitters Shoppe – employees washed windows, stocked shelves, dry-walled and painted as part of an expansion project.
