Each year, the Pittsburgh Marathon draws thousands of people to the city. This year’s event, held on Sunday, May 7, was no different, with more than 25,000 participants running either the full, half-marathon or marathon relay while their families and friends cheered them on to the finish line.
Duquesne Light volunteers have been part of Pittsburgh Marathon festivities for more than 30 years. Fluid station 9.9, located in Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood, was staffed by a dozen DLC employees and three retirees. They set up tables, mixed and distributed Gatorade and water and helped to clean up the race area. In addition to helping runners stay hydrated, volunteers also kept them motivated with cheers and words of encouragement along the way.
“I am so appreciative of our volunteers’ efforts to cover all of the fluid tables and keep the runners well hydrated,” said team captain Chris Navadauskas, a Major Account Manager. “We had so many compliments and words of thanks from passing runners. I am very grateful for their help and support – the collective effort from the volunteers is the key to the success of our stop each year!”
