Cancer touches the lives of many people across the world, and the American Cancer Society continues to play a significant role in the fight to end the disease – including providing financial support. Each year, the organization hosts thousands of its signature fundraising walks in effort to improve cancer survival, decrease the incidence of cancer and enhance the quality of life for patients and their caretakers.
Better known as Relay for Life, the event raises more than $14 million annually. Joanne Clark, Supervisor of Meter Data Analytics at Duquesne Light, became involved locally when her late husband was receiving cancer treatments. For the past several years, Clark has participated in her local Relay for Life as a member of the event’s leadership committee, and also has served as the captain of “Team Malkamania.”
On Saturday, June 2, Clark and a group of DLC employee volunteers, along with their families, friends and other community members, gathered at Riverside Park in Oakmont for this year’s event. Volunteers helped by walking the track, welcoming attendees, selling raffle tickets and placing special luminary bags along the track.“I support Relay for Life because it helps to inspire and create a sense of hope for those fighting cancer,” Clark said. “Cancer impacts all of our lives in some way, and this event serves as a way to fight this deadly disease by raising funds for the American Cancer Society.”
In addition to this year’s Relay for Life, an internal hoagie and bake sale was hosted by the Company’s Scheduling team in an effort to raise funds. The money raised, along with a Company match, brought this year’s total to more than $10,000.
