As part of its longstanding commitment to sustainability and responsible tree management, Duquesne Light launched a year-long tree planting initiative in 2018 to help maintain the tree canopy in the Pittsburgh region. With the motto, “right tree, right place,” DLC partnered with Tree Pittsburgh, a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring and protecting Pittsburgh’s urban forest for two tree giveaway events this fall.
The Company joined Tree Pittsburgh and other local organizations to distribute 1,000 trees to be planted throughout Allegheny County. DLC employee volunteers helped unload and distribute trees to community members at the two giveaway events – one held at the Pittsburgh Zoo on Saturday, Oct. 13, and the other held at North Park Ice Rink on Saturday, Nov. 3.
Trees were provided at no cost. Distributed species included river birch, sycamore, cornelian cherry dogwood, black gum and tulip poplar, among others.
DLC’s Ongoing Commitment
As part of its year-long tree planting initiative, DLC also has donated trees to local communities, planted trees in Schenley Park and provided education about the importance of the ‘right tree, right place” concept. That initiative encourages customers to select low-growing, utility-compatible trees for planting near power lines and related equipment and taller-growing trees located further away from overhead facilities.
Earlier this year, Duquesne Light received the Arbor Day Foundation's Tree Line USA award for best practices in vegetation management and community education – an accolade the Company has received for the past 17 years.
