Since earlier this summer, DLC employee volunteers have helped harvest more than 1,300 pounds of fruits and vegetables through a partnership with 412 Food Rescue. Employees specifically supported the organization’s ‘Hidden Harvest’ program, which supports 412 Food Rescue’s mission to end hunger and food waste.
Through ‘Hidden Harvest,’ the organization collects fruits and vegetables from public and privately-owned trees, orchards, farms and gardens with the help of volunteers. Once collected, the edible produce is donated to organizations that serve those who are experiencing food insecurity and the additional produce is delivered to local partners who turn it into a value-added product. For example, Wigle Whiskey used a portion of the fruit to make cider, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting 412 Food Rescue.
During volunteer events this summer and early fall, DLC employees helped gather produce from pre-identified trees throughout the City of Pittsburgh that would have otherwise gone to waste, including apples, cherries, crabapples and mulberries.
In an effort to help end hunger and food waste in our community, Duquesne Light will continue to partner with 412 Food Rescue through additional events in 2019.
