Duquesne Light has supported the Carnegie Science Center, in various ways, since it opened in 1991. Employees have lent their expertise and skills to the organization, including helping to foster and encourage the next generation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) professionals.
As the title sponsor of the Duquesne Light Center for STEM Education and Career Development, employees have several opportunities throughout the year to participate in Science Center events and programs. Following is a recap of recent events involving employee volunteers.
Engineering the Future
Every February, the Science Center hosts a special event for students and educators in recognition of National Engineers Week. This year, participants had the opportunity to learn more about this important profession through the “Engineering the Future” Showcase. During the three-day event, students were able to experience STEM through hands-on activities and science demonstrations.
DLC volunteers were on-hand each day to help check-in vendors, evaluate their presentations and exhibits to determine their effectiveness and help visitors navigate the showcase. In addition, the Career Café speed networking event gave students the chance to meet with STEM professionals from various companies and ask them questions.
SciTech Days
Twice a year, the Science Center hosts SciTech days for middle school and high school students. During the four-day event, students had the chance to interact with local companies that have STEM career opportunities. Approximately 600 students participated, representing more than 10 school districts.
DLC participated in two of the four days, one for middle school students and one for high school. During the middle school day, DLC volunteers, pictured on the home page, led a hands-on circuit activity. On the second day, Operations employees provided demonstrations of the Company’s “Juicer,” which is comprised of small utility poles connected by actual power lines and a transformer. They also provided attendees with helpful information about how DLC transmits electricity.
Each visitor who stopped by Duquesne Light’s table learned more about employment opportunities with the Company as well as ways in which we power our service territory.
Covestro Pittsburgh Regional Science & Engineering Fair
Another signature event that the Science Center holds is the annual Covestro Regional Science & Engineering Fair, which brings together up-and-coming scientists from across the region. Approximately 1,000 students from grades 6-12 participated in the fair by presenting their science projects for a chance to win more than $1 million in cash prizes and scholarships.
Several DLC employees supported the event by serving as judges for the projects as well as helping to set up the individual projects and displays.
