Local middle and high school students recently participated in SciTech Days at the Carnegie Science Center. The hands-on event, which was sponsored in part by Duquesne Light, enables students to experience workshops and featured programs, as well as explore interactive exhibits focusing on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) presented by local organizations.
Anna Slobodnyak, Operations Center Engineer, and Heather Hart, Supervisor, GIS, participated in the event on behalf of Duquesne Light. As part of DLC’s exhibit, they shared the importance of geographic information system (GIS) mapping with students in attendance, engaging them in a hands-on activity that involved running queries to find their school district and residence. In addition, they provided an overview of how DLC delivers power to customers, including building a circuit to demonstrate how our distribution system restores power following an outage.
“It’s always rewarding to share what I love with others, particularly children who could grow up to be the next generation of STEM professionals,” said Slobodnyak. “I feel lucky to work for a company that values community outreach, and enables me to have these opportunities.”
