From Home Repairs to Hope with Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh.
In today's challenging economic landscape, the dream of owning a home often feels out of reach. The ever-widening income inequality gap and the rising costs associated with homeownership create significant barriers for many, particular low-income families, seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
Travis Renville, the CEO of Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh, a nonprofit organization based in Homewood, emphasizes the financial burden of home maintenance. "Costs are soaring, and the expenses related to home upkeep have become increasingly prohibitive" says Renville. "Too many of our neighbors suffer from the health and economic consequences of living in substandard housing and unsafe communities."
Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh works for our neighbors and neighborhoods to perform health and safety repairs for homes at no cost. For the past decade, Rebuilding Pittsburgh has formed a remarkable partnership with Duquesne Light Company (DLC).
Keeping your lights on is essential. But what happens after that — powering communities — is even more special.
Working closely with residents and community leaders to understand a neighborhood's needs, Rebuilding Together mobilizes volunteers and contractors to perform repairs on homes, local businesses and community spaces.
In 2022, DLC volunteers helped transform a blighted and abandoned multifamily home into a rental property for low-income families in Perry South. The extensive renovation — topping nearly $450,000 — involved professional contractors addressing everything from plumbing to the roof. The two units were rented at below-market value to families earning less than 80% area median income (AMI).
Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh and DLC also collaborate on an energy reduction and education program for income-qualified residents. The Smart Comfort program offers free weatherization and energy assessments meant to help reduce your electric bill.
"Our partnership with Duquesne Light Company goes beyond the flicker of a light switch; it illuminates the essence of community collaboration. Their steadfast volunteer support is more than a contribution — it's a beacon of shared commitment to revitalizing homes and lives," shares Renville. "Together, we brighten the future for those in need, one house at a time."
Are you ready to get involved? Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh wants to extend their home repair programs into more neighborhoods across Allegheny County. Volunteer support plays a pivotal role in their ability to expand their reach.
